These training tips are meant for guidance only and are by no means definitive: Think about your walk, plan your day, and you’ll fully enjoy your Ivanhoe Way Challenge.

Here's a few handy preparation hints to make your day a success

Organise your week to make time for training.

Get into the habit of walking everywhere.

Get up an hour earlier and go out for a quick walk in the morning before work while it is still light.

Walk to work and back if you can. If you get to work by public transport, get off a stop or two earlier than usual, so that you walk some distance each day.

Use your lunchtimes to take regular brisk walks.

Swimming, squash, badminton, cycling and any other cardiovascular sport will also help get you prepared.

Join a leisure centre as the local fitness instructors may well be able to design a programme specifically for you.

Try to walk as much as possible in ‘real’ conditions and wearing your rucksack and boots.

Make the time to walk some consecutive long days in all weather: an isolated Sunday walk does not have the same effect as two consecutive days. Nothing will prepare you for the challenge better than actually walking.

Make sure you plan adequate rest/recovery days as part of your training.

Do regular exercise every week.  You will enjoy this challenge far more if you are physically fit.

After the first six weeks you need to gain endurance by walking long slow distances. Pick one day per week as your long walk to gain endurance.
