Carrying on from the successful event in 2009, the second Ivanhoe Way Challenge took place on Saturday 19th June 2010. We are pleased to announce that due to popular demand the challenge will go ahead in 2011, on Saturday 18th June. Watch this space for more details. The challenge, organised by Richard Bebbington and Angela Conibear, is for participants to walk 35 miles, around the Ivanhoe Way, in 15 hours. This was no mean feat as the walkers headed off from Ashby at 4am.
2010 Report
Walkers, from far afield as Cheltenham, were in good spirits throughout the walk, despite the early start. Great support was given to the walkers by marshals at checkpoints, throughout the walk. One walker, David Flanagan said, “It hurt at times, but we were doing it for the children. Our pains will heal”. As the day progressed it was obvious we would have some early finishers. Chris Haines and his team were first back to Hood Park Leisure Centre in less than 12 hours, beating their time from last year. The mileage is in dispute, as some walkers believe it was closer to 37 miles than 35. Nevertheless out of the 25 who started, 23 completed the challenge walk, an outstanding effort by all involved. The final total raised is expected to exceed £3,200, with every penny going to Wishes4Kids. Although participants were taking part to raise money for Wishes 4 Kids many of them had their own goals in mind. One participant, Angela Sealey, lost over 9 stone last year and had this challenge as her next milestone to complete. Another recently had an operation and wanted to prove to everyone that they were still capable of achieving this goal. Adam Clark, who walked in a team of 4 says, “The Ivanhoe Way Challenge is very difficult, but achievable goal. The sense of achievement, when getting to the end, is incredible”.
We are both delighted with how the event has gone and would like to say a big thank you to all the participants. We would also like to say a special thanks to all the volunteers, without them this event could not take place.
Next years event is already being organized and will take place on Saturday 18th June. Anyone who is interested in next year’s challenge can contact Richard or Angela at enquiries@ivanhoechallenge.co.uk or by calling 07751 259489.
2009 Report
All the walkers were in good spirits throughout the walk, despite the early start and the challenge ahead. Great support was given to the walkers by marshals at checkpoints. One walker, Fiona Winfield said, “This is definitely a challenge, but a great sense of achievement, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The volunteers encouragement helped us through the pain barrier”. As the day progressed it was obvious we would have some early finishers. David McNair and Tony Collier, both from Ashby, were first back to Hood Park Leisure Centre in just over 12 hours. Out of the 23 who started, 18 completed the 35 mile walk. This is an outstanding effort by all involved. The final total raised is expected to exceed £3,000, with every penny going to Wishes4Kids. Another quote from a walker a few days after the event sums it up, "Blisters are fine now, and will be gone soon, however the good memories of the walk will stay forever".
We are both delighted with how the event has gone and would like to say a big thank you to all the participants. We would also like to say a special thanks to all the volunteers, without them this event could not take place.
